Our mission
The journey toward a more sustainable transportation future has never been more important than it is today. Green Car Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was founded on this principle in 1999 and has worked in various ways to encourage more environmentally positive vehicles to market. Key to this is educating media and the public on the benefits of cleaner and more advanced vehicles, fuels, and technologies.
This mission was important during the early years of the Institute as exotic new technologies β like gasoline-electric hybrids, ethanol/methanol flexible-fuel vehicles, battery electric vehicles, advanced internal combustion models, and vehicles powered by natural gas, propane, and hydrogen β were being explored. While government and industry efforts are crucial to bringing cleaner and more efficient vehicles to our highways, so is a willing consumer market. The difference is that now, after years of development with few consumer products, new car showrooms offer an increasing and diverse range of high mpg, low emission, and advanced technology vehicles.
